Introduction
Bishop I.V. Hilliard, whose full name is Ira V. Hilliard, is an American Christian pastor, author, teacher, ministry strategist and the founder of New Light Christian Center Church in Houston, Texas. For more than four decades, his ministry has been associated with Word of Faith teaching, leadership development, church growth and practical Christian instruction.
Hilliard’s ministry story began unusually early. According to New Light Church’s official biography, he believed he was called to preach at nine years old and preached his first sermon at the age of 10. Decades later, that childhood calling developed into a ministry that grew from a small Houston congregation into a multi-location church organization with a national television presence and an extensive leadership network.
He and his wife, Pastor Bridget Hilliard, founded New Light Christian Center Church in September 1984. The church’s own history records that the first service began with approximately 300 people, but the congregation subsequently fell to just 23 members. Hilliard continued leading the ministry, eventually building New Light into a major Houston-based church with multiple locations.
His ministry has also extended beyond the local congregation. In 1995, Hilliard launched the Church Development Strategies Conference, which later became known as the Strategies Conference. The conference was designed to equip pastors and church leaders with practical principles for ministry growth and development. He later founded the Association of Independent Ministries, or AIM, to provide mentoring and spiritual support to pastors and ministry leaders.
Hilliard is also a prolific Christian writer. His books include Living the Maximized Life, Men@Work, Mental Toughness for Success, The Maximized Life Journey and other resources centered on faith, purpose, family, personal development and victorious Christian living.
Although he stepped away from the senior pastorate in 2018, Hilliard has not withdrawn from ministry. He and Bridget passed leadership of New Light Church to their daughter, Dr. Irishea Hilliard, after he had spent 33 years pastoring the church. He now remains active through the ministry’s Evangelical Division and Hilliard International Ministries.
His career has therefore moved through several distinct stages: childhood preacher, local pastor, church founder, author, ministry mentor and senior statesman within the Word of Faith movement.

At a Glance
Bishop I.V. Hilliard’s career is best understood through the relationship between faith, church building and leadership development.
His story began long before New Light Church existed. He has described receiving a call to preach when he was only nine years old and delivering his first sermon one year later. That early sense of calling remained central to his life as he moved into adulthood and pastoral ministry.
By the early 1980s, Hilliard was pastoring a small congregation in Houston. He later described the period around 1980 as a particularly difficult point in his ministry. In a later testimony, he recalled having only a modest facility and a very small congregation while learning what he described as a lifestyle of faith.
That experience became part of the foundation for the ministry philosophy that would later characterize New Light.
In September 1984, Hilliard and Bridget founded New Light Church. The church initially had approximately 300 people, but the membership dropped dramatically to 23 after the founding service. Rather than abandoning the ministry, Hilliard continued building it.
Over the following decades, New Light expanded into a multi-location ministry in Texas. The church developed television programming, ministry training, community initiatives and other organizational structures.
Hilliard’s influence eventually expanded beyond his own congregation through conferences and pastor-to-pastor mentoring.
The most significant leadership transition in his career came in 2018, when his daughter, Dr. Irishea Hilliard, became senior pastor. This marked the end of Hilliard’s 33-year tenure as the church’s pastor while allowing him and Bridget to continue serving in ministry.

Early Life and Calling to Ministry
Ira V. Hilliard was born in Houston, Texas, and grew up in the city that would eventually become the center of his ministry.
His story of entering Christian ministry begins unusually early.
According to the official New Light biography, Hilliard believed he was called to preach at the age of nine. Rather than immediately stepping into public ministry, he waited a year because he wanted his pastor to confirm that he had genuinely heard from God.
At 10, he preached his first sermon on a Mother’s Day evening.
That early experience established a pattern that would remain important throughout his life: preaching was not something he discovered later as a career. He understood it as a calling that had been placed on his life during childhood.
The story has been repeated throughout profiles of Hilliard because it helps explain the remarkable length of his ministry career.
Meeting Bridget Hilliard
Hilliard’s personal and ministry journey is closely connected with his wife, Bridget.
Bridget E. Harrison was born in Houston and grew up in the Christian faith. The two met while they were young and eventually began a relationship.
They married on October 4, 1975.
Their marriage became a partnership that extended far beyond their family life. Bridget would become a co-founder of New Light Christian Center Church and an important figure within the ministry.
The couple have consistently presented their ministry as a joint assignment, with Hilliard’s teaching and leadership working alongside Bridget’s pastoral, mentoring and women’s ministry interests.
The Difficult Years Before New Light
Before New Light Church became a large ministry, Hilliard experienced years of modest circumstances.
In a later testimony about his faith journey, he recalled that by 1980 he had already spent approximately 18 years preaching but was still leading a very small congregation.
He described having only a small building and borrowed chairs, with fewer members than chairs available.
Rather than seeing those circumstances as the end of his pastoral calling, Hilliard has described that period as an important season in which he learned to rely on faith and trust God with the future of his ministry.
That experience would later become part of the theological and motivational framework of his preaching.
Founding New Light Christian Center Church
On September 2, 1984, Hilliard and Bridget officially founded New Light Church in Houston.
The founding congregation numbered approximately 300 people.
However, the initial excitement did not translate immediately into sustained membership. According to New Light’s official history, the congregation eventually fell to only 23 people.
The dramatic decline could easily have ended a young ministry.
Instead, Hilliard continued.
Over the years, New Light steadily developed into a much larger organization.
The church eventually operated multiple locations across Texas and developed ministries that extended beyond conventional Sunday services.
The story of the 300-person opening followed by a drop to 23 members became part of New Light’s institutional history because it illustrates the early uncertainty surrounding the ministry’s development.
Building New Light Church
Hilliard’s approach to church leadership combined preaching with organizational development.
New Light eventually developed multiple campuses, television ministry, training initiatives and community programs.
The church describes itself as a Word of Faith congregation focused on equipping people to live victorious lives.
The organization’s current materials continue to identify Hilliard and Bridget as its founders while describing the ministry as a long-standing Houston institution that has continued under the leadership of their daughter, Dr. Irishea Hilliard.
The church’s evolution also reflects Hilliard’s emphasis on leadership development.
He did not build the ministry around his own pulpit alone. He created structures designed to train other pastors and leaders.
That emphasis eventually became one of the defining aspects of his broader ministry.
The Strategies Conference
In 1995, Hilliard launched the Church Development Strategies Conference.
The conference was created to help pastors and ministry leaders understand practical approaches to church development and growth.
Over time, it became known as the Strategies Conference.
New Light’s biography describes the event as attracting thousands of pastors and leaders to Houston.
The conference became an extension of Hilliard’s pastoral philosophy. Rather than limiting his teaching to members of New Light, he sought to share the organizational and leadership lessons he had learned while developing the church.
This became one of the ways Hilliard’s influence extended beyond Houston.
Association of Independent Ministries
In 2001, Hilliard established the Association of Independent Ministries, commonly known as AIM.
The organization was designed around pastoral mentoring and spiritual leadership.
New Light describes AIM as a network of pastors who regard Hilliard as a spiritual father or mentor. Its official biography has previously described the organization as having approximately 1,000 pastors.
The creation of AIM reflects another major element of Hilliard’s ministry philosophy: leadership multiplication.
His influence has therefore not depended entirely on the size of his own congregation. Through mentoring relationships, conferences and ministry training, he has attempted to influence pastors who lead their own congregations.
Becoming a Bishop
Hilliard was confirmed as a Bishop in February 2007.
The title reflected the broader role he had assumed within the Christian ministry community.
By that stage, he was no longer known simply as the pastor of one Houston church. He had become a mentor to other pastors, a conference speaker, an author and a nationally recognized Christian broadcaster.
His bishopric also formalized a leadership identity that had already extended beyond the local congregation.
Television Ministry
New Light’s ministry developed a national television presence as Hilliard’s influence grew.
His teachings became available beyond the physical campuses of the church, allowing viewers outside Houston to engage with his messages.
Television became particularly important for the ministry’s expansion during an era when Christian broadcasters could reach audiences far beyond their local congregations.
Hilliard’s teaching style, which combines biblical principles with practical instruction about faith, personal development and leadership, translated naturally into broadcast programming.
I.V. Hilliard as an Author
Hilliard has written numerous books aimed at helping Christians apply biblical principles to everyday life.
His writing covers subjects including faith, personal responsibility, purpose, family, mental resilience and financial stability.
His books are generally written in an accessible teaching style rather than as academic theological works.
That reflects the broader purpose of his ministry.
Hilliard’s central concern has often been practical Christian living: how believers can translate what they believe into how they think, work, lead, relate to others and respond to challenges.
Living the Maximized Life
One of Hilliard’s best-known books is Living the Maximized Life: How to Win No Matter Where You’re Starting From.
The book encourages readers to approach life through biblical principles while taking responsibility for their choices, mindset and spiritual development.
The work was published by Thomas Nelson and has remained one of Hilliard’s most recognizable titles.
Its central message is consistent with his wider teaching ministry: a person’s starting circumstances do not have to determine the direction of the rest of their life.
The book combines Scripture with practical instruction and personal-development concepts.
Men@Work
Another significant title is Men@Work: How Men Can Renew Their Commitments to God, to Family, and to Themselves.
Published by Harrison House, the book focuses specifically on men’s responsibilities to God, their families and themselves.
Hilliard uses biblical principles to address issues of identity, purpose, responsibility and personal growth.
The book reflects his interest in strengthening family relationships alongside spiritual development.
Mental Toughness for Success
Hilliard also authored Mental Toughness for Success: Proven Biblical Principles for Successful Living.
The book reflects one of his recurring themes: the connection between a person’s mindset and their ability to navigate adversity.
Rather than treating success as simply an economic concept, Hilliard’s teaching typically connects it with discipline, faith, purpose and responsible action.
This perspective has been a recurring feature of his books and conference teachings.
The Maximized Life Journey
Another title associated with Hilliard is The Maximized Life Journey: 52 Days to Victorious Living.
The format is designed around a structured devotional journey.
Rather than presenting a single extended argument, the book gives readers a sequence of teachings intended to encourage practical application over time.
This format fits Hilliard’s wider approach to Christian instruction, where spiritual principles are connected to specific decisions and daily habits.
Hilliard’s Teaching on Faith
Faith has been at the center of Hilliard’s ministry from its earliest years.
His personal testimony about building New Light from a tiny congregation into a major ministry has frequently been used to illustrate his understanding of faith.
His teaching generally emphasizes faith as something that must influence behavior.
In his own words from a later ministry appearance, he described learning that faith was not merely for personal benefit but should also be used to advance God’s Kingdom.
That idea appears repeatedly in his preaching and ministry training.
His Word of Faith Background
New Light identifies itself as a Word of Faith church.
This theological tradition places considerable emphasis on biblical faith, God’s promises, confession, healing, prosperity and victorious Christian living.
Hilliard’s ministry has been part of that wider movement for decades.
His teaching has often connected faith with practical areas such as finances, health, family, leadership and personal development.
At the same time, his ministry has attracted criticism over some aspects of its financial teaching and ministry lifestyle.
Those controversies form part of the public record surrounding his career and should be distinguished from the church’s own description of his theological position.
The Helicopter Fundraising Controversy
One of the most widely reported controversies involving Hilliard occurred in 2013, when New Light supporters were asked to contribute a “$52 favor seed” toward an upgrade involving the church’s helicopter.
The appeal attracted criticism because of the perception that church members were being asked to help finance an expensive ministry asset.
Contemporary reporting noted that church officials defended the fundraising effort, arguing that the helicopter served a practical purpose for transporting ministry leaders among the church’s locations.
The episode became part of the wider public debate surrounding prosperity-oriented ministries and the financial practices of high-profile pastors.
It is important to distinguish the documented fundraising appeal from broader claims about Hilliard’s finances that are not supported by audited personal records.
The $15 Million Property Controversy
Hilliard’s finances also received attention when a large property associated with New Light Church was listed for sale.
MinistryWatch reported in 2024 that a 24-acre estate with six houses and 22 garage spaces had been listed for $15 million and identified Hilliard and Bridget as living there. The report noted that the property belonged to New Light Church rather than being documented as Hilliard’s personally owned asset.
That distinction is important.
A property owned by a religious organization should not automatically be treated as part of an individual’s personal net worth.
The episode nevertheless attracted public attention because of the scale of the property and the broader questions surrounding pastoral compensation, church-owned housing and ministry finances.
Passing the Leadership to Irishea Hilliard
One of the most important developments in Hilliard’s later ministry was his decision to pass the senior pastorate of New Light Church to his daughter, Dr. Irishea Hilliard.
The transition followed approximately a decade of preparation and mentoring.
New Light’s official history states that Irishea became senior pastor in 2018 after Hilliard had spent 33 years pastoring the church.
The transition represented a major generational change.
Instead of leaving the ministry to an unrelated successor, Hilliard transferred the pastoral leadership to a member of the next generation who had already served in several significant roles within New Light.
Preparing Irishea Hilliard for Leadership
Irishea Hilliard had spent years working inside New Light before becoming senior pastor.
Her roles included youth ministry, children’s ministry, campus leadership and chief operating officer responsibilities.
She also worked closely with her father for approximately a decade before assuming the senior pastorate.
This meant the 2018 transition was not sudden.
It was the culmination of an extended period of mentoring and preparation.
A contemporary Houston Chronicle profile reported that Hilliard had initially not imagined herself taking over the church. She had studied accounting and had considered pursuing a conventional professional career before eventually accepting a ministry calling.
Her father subsequently began preparing her for leadership, including giving her greater responsibility within New Light.
The Hilliard Family
Family has been an important part of Hilliard’s ministry story.
He and Bridget have three daughters:
- Tina Hilliard-Egans
- Irishea Hilliard
- Preashea Hilliard
The family has maintained a strong connection to Christian ministry.
Irishea became senior pastor of New Light.
Preashea Hilliard has pursued a career in gospel music and worship ministry.
The family’s involvement in ministry illustrates the generational character of New Light.
I.V. Hilliard’s Wife, Bridget
Bridget Hilliard has been one of the most important figures in the development of New Light Church.
She co-founded the church with I.V. and worked alongside him throughout its growth.
New Light describes Bridget as a philanthropist, mentor and ministry leader.
Her ministry has particularly focused on women and girls.
She has also written Christian books, including works centered on faith and victorious Christian living.
After the pastoral transition in 2018, Bridget continued to serve through mentoring and other ministry activities rather than simply withdrawing from public Christian work.
I.V. Hilliard’s Children and Grandchildren
The Hilliards have three daughters and several grandchildren.
The original New Light biography identified four grandchildren: Ira-Emanuel, Briona Janae, Ivan Harrison and Jonathan Sean-Michael.
The family’s younger generation has also become involved in ministry.
This generational continuity is especially visible through Irishea’s leadership at New Light and the ministry involvement of other family members.
Hilliard International Ministries
Following the pastoral transition, Hilliard and Bridget continued their work through Hilliard International Ministries.
The organization describes itself as a nonprofit Christian ministry founded by the couple with the mission of sharing the love of Jesus through biblical faith principles.
Its stated goal is to build people of “purpose, power, and praise.”
The organization provides a platform through which Hilliard can continue teaching, preaching and mentoring without occupying the senior pastorate of New Light Church.
Life After the Senior Pastorate
Leaving the senior pastorate did not mean retirement from Christian ministry.
Instead, Hilliard’s role changed.
New Light describes him and Bridget as remaining active in ministry while overseeing the church’s Evangelical Division.
This arrangement allows the next generation to lead the local church while the founders continue contributing their experience and teaching.
The structure also demonstrates Hilliard’s long-standing emphasis on leadership succession.
For a ministry founded in 1984, the ability to transition leadership while retaining the founders’ involvement represents an important stage in New Light’s institutional development.
I.V. Hilliard as a Mentor to Pastors
Pastoral mentoring has become one of the strongest themes of Hilliard’s later ministry.
Through AIM and the Strategies Conference, he has invested significant time in pastors who are building their own ministries.
The model is different from traditional denominational supervision.
AIM was established as a fellowship for independent ministries, giving pastors access to mentoring and spiritual relationships while allowing them to maintain their own local leadership.
This reflects Hilliard’s experience as a pastor who built an independent ministry outside the conventional denominational structure.
His Leadership Philosophy
Several themes consistently appear in Hilliard’s ministry.
Faith
Faith is the foundation of his teaching.
He frequently presents faith as a practical way of approaching challenges rather than merely a doctrinal concept.
Purpose
Hilliard teaches that Christians should understand why they exist and what they are called to accomplish.
Purpose therefore appears repeatedly in his preaching, books and ministry programs.
Leadership
His conferences and mentoring networks demonstrate a strong interest in developing leaders.
Personal Responsibility
Many of his books emphasize the importance of choices, discipline, mindset and personal action.
Family
Hilliard’s teaching for men and families reflects his belief that spiritual growth should influence relationships at home.
His Influence Beyond Houston
Although Houston remains the geographical center of Hilliard’s ministry, his influence has extended far beyond Texas.
His television ministry has given him a national audience.
His books have reached readers who may never have attended New Light.
His Strategies Conference has brought pastors and ministry leaders to Houston.
AIM has connected him with independent ministries across the United States.
Through these platforms, Hilliard has developed an influence that is broader than the membership of his own church.
Bishop I.V. Hilliard’s Ministry in 2026
As of 2026, Hilliard is no longer the senior pastor of New Light Church.
That position is held by his daughter, Dr. Irishea Hilliard.
However, he remains active as a founder, teacher and ministry leader.
Hilliard International Ministries continues to identify him as one of its founders, while New Light continues to recognize him and Bridget as the founders of the church.
His current ministry therefore represents a different stage of leadership: less focused on running a large local congregation and more focused on teaching, mentoring, ministry development and legacy.
Bishop I.V. Hilliard’s Net Worth
Bishop I.V. Hilliard’s net worth is estimated at approximately $22 million.
This estimate has appeared in public reporting, including coverage of the financial questions surrounding the New Light ministry and property associated with the church.
However, the figure should not be presented as an audited or officially disclosed personal net worth.
Hilliard’s financial picture is particularly difficult to calculate because his public ministry has involved churches, ministry organizations, publishing, conferences, media activities and church-owned property. Assets belonging to a nonprofit religious organization should not automatically be counted as the pastor’s personal assets.
The $22 million figure is therefore best understood as a widely cited estimate, rather than a confirmed statement of Hilliard’s personal wealth.

Conclusion
Bishop I.V. Hilliard’s life and ministry represent more than four decades of Christian leadership.
From preaching his first sermon at age 10 to establishing one of Houston’s best-known independent Christian ministries, his career has been shaped by a consistent emphasis on faith, purpose, leadership and practical Christian living.
The story of New Light Church is central to understanding his legacy. What began in 1984 with a congregation of approximately 300 people quickly became a difficult test when the membership dropped to 23. Hilliard continued leading the church, and over the following decades New Light developed into a major ministry with multiple locations, media outreach and leadership-development programs.
His influence also grew through the Strategies Conference and the Association of Independent Ministries. These initiatives allowed him to mentor pastors and church leaders beyond his own congregation.
His publishing career added another dimension. Through books such as Living the Maximized Life, Men@Work and Mental Toughness for Success, Hilliard translated many of the themes of his preaching into written resources for Christian readers.
Perhaps the most important leadership decision of his later years was his transition from senior pastor to founder and mentor. After 33 years at the helm of New Light, he entrusted the senior pastorate to his daughter, Dr. Irishea Hilliard, in 2018.
That transition placed his ministry into a new generational chapter while allowing him and Bridget to remain active.
Today, Hilliard’s legacy can be seen not only in the church he founded but also in the pastors he has mentored, the books he has written, the conferences he established and the family ministry structure he helped create.
His career illustrates how a ministry that began with a small congregation can develop into a multi-generational Christian institution while continuing to adapt its leadership for a new era.
